TF HTAP Workshop on Global and Regional Modelling for Assessing Hemispheric Air Pollution

The UNECE CLRTAP Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (TF HTAP) has initiated a comprehensive modelling study to assess the importance of intercontinental transport of air pollution. A series of Task Force meetings and workshops have taken place focusing on policy relevant science questions, taking stock of previous research and exploring specific topics related to model intercomparisons, emission inventories, and observations. The next TF HTAP meeting is planned for 17 to 19 October 2007 in Jülich, Germany.

Coordinated experiments with global and regional chemical transport models have been carried out with participation from many research groups. Results from these first experiments are being used as input to the TF HTAP's 2007 interim assessment report (see draft text on In the second phase of the modelling intercomparison experiments, several studies have been identified that will lead to a better understanding of the processes that determine the export, chemical transformations, and import of air pollution on the regional to continental scale. A specific objective of these experiments is to better understand and quantify the impacts of scale and of specific model parameterisations.

The Jülich workshop will be used to review the progress in the common model experiments and shall place a strong focus on the coherency of simulation results obtained by models of different scale and type. The objectives are
  • To report on the progress of first interim assessment report of the TF HTAP and evaluate the role of the model experiments run in support of this activity
  • To assess the potential and limitations of global and regional models for quantifying export and import fluxes of air pollutants on the regional to continental scale
  • To quantify the impacts of model resolution on the quality and consistency of the simulations
  • To identify the impact of specific parameterisations on model predictions and identify potential biases in multi-model ensembles
  • To advance the development of methods and tools for using observations to systematically quantify model errors
  • To encourage the participation of regional modelling groups in the activities of the TF HTAP and facilitate the exchange between regional and global modelling groups
The outcome of this workshop will be a detailed planning of the simulation experiments and analyses to be performed in support of the TF HTAP's 2009 assessment report. Representatives from many national and international programmes will be invited to participate and contribute, and we specifically invite participation from regional modelling groups. The agenda will include invited speakers, poster presentations, and discussions. A workshop report will document the recommendations of the working groups and short summaries of the presentations as well as detailed plans for future model experiments.
